The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) held a joint meeting July 7–9, 2015, in Boulder, Colorado at NOAA’s David Skaggs Research Center. This effort enabled SERDP and NOAA to explore common research needs and opportunities to engage on future projects. The workshop welcomed more than 50 researchers with various expertise in climate change modeling, impacts, and decision framework development. The collaborative meeting allowed participants to review the status and contributions of completed research, explore insights of ongoing research, and identify potential future opportunities for SERDP research investments. The workshop sessions included presentations and discussions on regional perspectives in the Southeast and Southwest United States, Alaska, and the Pacific Islands, climate information at moderate time scales of two to 20 years, and decision framing.
The SERDP Climate Change Program Review and NOAA Partnership Meeting Summary Report captures the results and keynotes of the workshop and identifies potential new research directions for SERDP’s investment strategy. The report summarizes conclusions, research needs, and cross-cutting themes. The document includes brief summaries of each presentation’s objectives and key findings. Themes that will inform future SERDP research interests include improved understanding of how to improve the usefulness of scientific information for decision-making, as well as the need for additional attention on the characterization of ecological, social, and physical thresholds to inform decisions.
