The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) released a supplemental SERDP Exploratory Development (SEED) solicitation on September 26, 2024 seeking proposals to develop and test the feasibility of technologies to separate fluoropolymers from particulate filler using an environmentally friendly process. Proposals are due October 31, 2024 by 2:00 p.m. ET.

A SEED Solicitation is a means for researchers to test proof of concept during an effort of approximately one year. These projects will be funded at a level not to exceed $250,000 in total cost. Successful SEED projects may lead to more extensive follow-on research or development efforts.

Fluoropolymers, such as Viton (vinylidene difluoride/hexafluoropropylene copolymer) and Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene) are the polymers of interest. The polymers and metal powders are typically mixed and processed into fully dense and cohesive mixtures to maximize surface area between the fluoropolymer and filler. A cost-effective means of separating fluoropolymers and metal powders would reduce potential environmental impacts and Department of Defense costs for hazardous waste treatment or disposal.

SERDP invests in basic and applied research to ensure the military maintains its edge, identifying and addressing critical knowledge gaps to propel us towards ground-breaking scientific concepts and solutions. Funded projects protect built and natural infrastructure, strengthen the defense supply chain, and ensure the health and safety of our Warfighters.

About SERDP & ESTCP

The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) fund resilience, restoration, and conservation projects that enhance capabilities and sustain operations at Department of Defense (DoD) installations. SERDP identifies and addresses priority environmental science and technology opportunities that focus on mission requirements, and ESTCP transitions technologies out of the lab and into the field. The programs report to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy Resilience & Optimization headquartered at the Pentagon. For more information, visit https://serdp-estcp.mil.
