DoD operates worldwide and encounters a range of corrosion-inducing environments, resulting in an annual cost of corrosion for equipment and facilities of approximately $20 billion. Many of the technologies required to repair or mitigate corrosion require toxic metals or solvents and result in hazardous wastes as well as impacts to the work environment. This technical session provided an overview of the DoD policy and strategy as well as providing technical briefings on successful implementations of alternative materials, and accelerated corrosion models and methods which take into account alternative materials and real world failure mechanisms.
