As DoD’s environmental technology programs, SERDP and ESTCP strive to leave the smallest environmental footprint possible from our Symposium & Workshop. Following are some of our environmentally friendly initiatives.
- The selection of an event location for our Symposium & Workshop that is easily accessible by metrorail service and other public transportation.
- A self-contained conference facility that eliminates the need for travel from one site to another.
- The Marriott Corporation, parent company for our event location, which was selected for the 2009 Tourism for Tomorrow Award for Sustainability.
- energy efficient lighting sources in public spaces and guest rooms
- a linen/terry reuse program in guest rooms
- a single stream recycling program for paper, plastic, and glass in meeting areas
- the use of Green Seal Certified cleaning supplies
- newspaper recycling bins on each guest room elevator landing
- an on-site water and energy saving laundry facility
- procurement of locally grown foods when possible
- the use of excess food from events in the Associate’s Cafeteria
- The use of non-toxic, eco-friendly products by our event decorating company, Hargrove, Inc., for producing many of the signs seen at our Symposium & Workshop and, whenever possible, creating reusable signage for our events.
- Keeping printed materials to a minimum by providing abstracts and other information to attendees on a CD and posting all technical presentations on the Symposium website (symposium.serdp-estcp.org) after our event.
- The use of recycled paper containing at least 30 percent post-consumer fiber and agribased inks made from soy, corn, and other vegetable by-products by our print firm, Lake Litho, for producing printed materials used at the Symposium & Workshop.
- Recycling name badge holders for use in future years.
