Objective

The technical objectives of this project are to:

  1. Finalize and transition a Hierarchical Data Format, version 5 (HDF5) schema that is optimized for dynamic Advanced Geophysical Classification (AGC) data.
  2. Demonstrate acquisition and processing of dynamic one-pass data at the 0.5-acre Aberdeen Proving Ground test plot with marine and terrestrial sensors:

          a. UltraTEM Marine. The system will be configured on a towed platform for terrestrial deployment.

          b. Planned terrestrial AGC sensors include: 2Tx Portable UltraTEM Classifier, Man Portable Vector, and MetalMapper 2x2.

These data sets are intended to be part of a set of standardized datasets for ongoing AGC software validation and will be delivered in HDF5 format.

Technology Description

A standardized HDF5 file format definition for use with AGC electro-magnetic induction (EMI) sensor systems has been developed for use in munitions response efforts being conducted under the Department of Defense (DoD) AGC Accreditation Program (DAGCAP). While HDF5 is designed for efficient access of large scientific datasets, the implementation of version 1 of the HDF5 standard for AGC data is not optimized for large, dynamic AGC data sets. The UltraTEM Marine system is an advanced, multi-component EMI sensor platform designed for the detection and classification of underwater metallic threats, including both ferrous and non-ferrous unexploded ordnance.

Benefits

The HDF5 version 2 schema for AGC EMI data is a necessary improvement to allow for processing of large AGC data sets using a file format that is compliant with DAGCAP requirements. This improvement is particularly needed for marine AGC systems which generate large volumes of data. Additionally, the format will allow for storage of raw data streams from electro-magnetic, attitude and location sensors. This allows for improved root cause analysis and corrective action when there is an issue with one of these sensors. In addition, the establishment of software validation datasets for all AGC sensors will allow software vendors to validate future updates to software for a wide range of AGC sensors as well as potentially add capabilities to process and classify data from additional AGC sensors to validated software. Datasets will be provided to all validated software vendors and DoD components. (Anticipated Project Completion - 2026)
