Objective

This project aims to reduce wildfire risks caused by biomass – branches, leaves and other plant material – in Southern California. Using CharBoss technology, the project will convert biomass into a form of charcoal also known as biochar and identify best applications for it on the landscape. 

Technology Description

The CharBoss is an innovative, self-contained air curtain burner (burning chamber that minimizes smoke emissions) designed to efficiently convert wood waste into biochar. It features a refractory-lined burn container that can withstand high temperatures, a liquid-cooled diesel engine, and a heavy-duty air fan. It is capable of processing between 1/2 to 1 ton per hour of woody material and producing around 350 pounds of biochar per hour. 

Field testing will take place in selected U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and Department of War (DoW) lands in Southern California, chosen for their diverse biomass and environmental conditions. Controlled trials with different shrub species and conditions will measure combustion efficiency, emission levels, and biochar quality. Key tasks include optimizing biochar yield, ensuring safety with minimal ember production, and evaluating the resource impact and economic benefit of biochar application.

Additionally, CharBoss technology can provide a cost-effective solution for managing biomass by converting it into valuable biochar, which can serve as an alternative to chemical fertilizers, reducing land management costs. The scalability of this technology promises significant benefits within treated sites, enhancing mission readiness through improved soil quality and ecosystem stability. (Anticipated Project Completion - 2028)
