The objective of this project is to enhance the transfer of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), and other organizations' research and demonstration results to to environmental professionals, facilitating the permitting, design, and implementation of environmental projects in a timely and easily-accessible manner.

The Environmental (Enviro) Wiki was developed by ESTCP to provide more readily accessible, current information on important environmental topics including environmental restoration (soil and groundwater chemicals of concern, attenuation and transport processes, characterization, assessment and monitoring, remediation technologies, etc.), impacted sediments, natural resources, emerging chemicals of concern, and climate change impacts. The Enviro Wiki design is similar to Wikipedia with short ‘encyclopedia’ type summaries of current information, technical challenges, and extensive links to reports and project summaries of research funded by SERDP, ESTCP, and others. The content is written and peer-reviewed by recognized experts in the field from academia and industry, many of whom have already written similar content for SERDP and ESTCP, to assure its validity. Article references, SERDP and ESTCP project reports, and other credible documents are linked to each article for easy reference. Individual articles are approximately 5 to 8 written pages long with a few figures and tables, references, and links to SERDP and ESTCP projects and related content. Article drafts are reviewed and edited by both internal and external reviewers. The article is then revised by the author(s) based on the review-based feedback and returned to the Enviro Wiki team to be re-evaluated and posted.

Phase I Results

The current Enviro Wiki includes 115 articles, more than 1,600 external links, and 874 reference documents saved within it. The quality of the existing articles is also expanded by adding more visuals (i.e., short (2-3 min) videos, illustrative graphics, updating the technical content to ensure the articles remain current, providing greater depth, and/or contrasting/ alternative perspective(s) for emerging issue(s). Enviro Wiki is advertised extensively through tweets, LinkedIn posts, conference presentations and posters to encourage contributions, accelerate awareness and adoption of the Enviro Wiki as the ‘go-to’ site for environmental practitioners.

SERDP and ESTCP have supported an extensive portfolio of projects that substantially improves our understanding of subsurface processes and the effectiveness of different remediation approaches. While the results of this work are readily accessible, the primary distribution pathway for SERDP and ESTCP. This project will make prior SERDP and ESTCP-funded research much more readily available to professionals at all levels. This project directly expands and enhances a well-suited vehicle (a Wikipedia-like platform) for technology transfer that will provide significant cost savings to Department of Defense over the short- and long-term.
