Objective
Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) intends to develop a systematic methodology for the electrification of non-tactical vehicles (NTV) used on Department of Defense (DoD) bases (or installations). A critical factor in this process will be developing methods to accurately catalog existing NTV populations, operational cycles, and fueling needs. The project will consider developing methodologies for assessing NTV data quality, potential data sources for operational data, techniques to estimate NTV operations where quantitative data is lacking, and methods to translate existing fueling and operations data into electrified NTV electrical power and energy needs estimates. For each key area of study identified, an in-depth evaluation of the issues and constraints will be conducted based on a study of a sample DoD installation to be chosen as a part of this project. The outcome of this project will be a replicable, holistic, and systematic approach for DoD bases to implement programs to electrify NTV.
Technology Description
One of the key aspects for electrification of NTV is developing a comprehensive understanding of the “as-is” form and function of those vehicles, particularly in having clear metrics for power and energy consumption of the operating fleet and how the vehicles are presently fueled. This is essential in understanding the future electrical system impacts from converting a combustion fuel-based NTV fleet to an all-electric fleet. EPRI will leverage tools and analysis developed for this assessment for conventional, commercial fleet applications. EPRI also intends to develop power and energy estimation methods for NTV where operational records may be lacking in determining detailed power and energy needs.
Benefits
Electrification of a bases' non-tactical fleet may offer several benefits, including reduction of fleet's resource needs, lower fuel costs, and lower maintenance costs for the overall fleet. This project effort will also support mandated NTV electrification requirements by providing a systematic approach.
