Objective
The objective of this project is to demonstrate Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charging technology as a scalable solution to fleet vehicle electrification at Department of Defense (DoD) installations, given its ability to contribute to energy efficiency and reduce the Total Cost of Ownership for EVs and corresponding infrastructure. V2X bidirectional EV charging technology can reduce peak electric loads on site to reduce energy bill demand charges and participate in demand response programs to earn revenue from the local utility.
Technology Description
V2X platforms optimize building energy efficiency and demand by managing bidirectional EV batteries to flatten building electric load profiles. Fermata Energy’s V2G platform, driven by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, predicts building peaks and will flatten the load by charging or discharging the bidirectional EV batteries. Fermata’s Energy-Link monitors buildings' loads and sends building energy usage data to a cloud-based V2X platform in real time. If the building is connected to the local utility grid, the V2X platform can incorporate utility energy and demand pricing to reduce the site’s electricity bill. It can also participate in utility demand response programs by accepting commands from the utility.
Benefits
This V2X platform provides enhanced energy resilience, optimized grid integration and operational efficiency compared to current practices. The platform offers cost savings by optimizing energy utilization, reducing electricity costs, and creating revenue opportunities through grid services participation. Moreover, it enhances energy resilience by allowing EVs to function as backup power sources during emergencies, ensuring uninterrupted operations and support for critical infrastructure. This optimized energy management also leads to improved operational efficiency, facilitating better fleet management and meeting mission demands effectively.
Overall, bidirectional charging technology offers the DoD another approach to energy management, optimizing energy usage, enhancing grid stability, and bolstering energy resilience while reducing costs and environmental impact.
